1. Think About Your Educational Goals

In the state of Utah, there are many scholarships available for students looking to pursue higher education. However, you must first have a clear idea of what your educational goals are in order to apply for the right scholarships for you. This will help you determine what kind of scholarships you need to apply for and also how much money you may potentially receive if awarded one.

Some of the best scholarships offer a variety of awards for different areas of interest. These include a wide range of subjects, academic achievements, and even extracurricular activities like volunteering. In addition, the Trailblazer Promise scholarship is automatically awarded at UT for students who complete the FAFSA application. However, it is important to keep in mind that the Trailblazer Promise is only offered for incoming freshmen. Other scholarships, such as the Opportunity Scholarship, are open to all high school students.

The Opportunity Scholarship is an achievement-based scholarship program offering up to $18 million per year for a broad category of students who demonstrate academic achievement. The scholarships are divided into two categories—Regents Track and Advanced Course Track—each with its own specific requirements. The Opportunity Scholarship is available to students who attend full-time in a Direct Payment private school or participate in a co-enrollment program. Students can choose from more than 600 schools that accept Opportunity Scholarship funds.

Students who participate in the Opportunity Scholarship can use the funds to pay for tuition, fees, textbooks, testing costs, supplemental materials, educational therapies, and other expenses associated with their education. This is a great way to make the pursuit of higher learning accessible to all Utah students, regardless of their family income.

Scholarships can lighten the financial load of pursuing your education and allow you to focus on what is really important: getting an excellent education. With so many opportunities available, you can find the scholarship that is a perfect fit for your academic interests and career plans.

Student loan debt is at an all-time high, and the pursuit of a higher education can be expensive. In-state tuition is less expensive than out-of-state tuition, and the more scholarships you are able to get, the lower your loan debt will be upon graduation.

2. Think About Your Career Goals

A career goal is a specific plan for how you want to advance professionally in the future. It could include anything from learning a new programming language to becoming a fully licensed surgeon. A clear and concise career goal will give the scholarship committee an idea of how you intend to move forward in your chosen field of study.

The first step in creating a career goal is to identify your core values and priorities. This is done through introspection and will help you determine what matters most to you on your professional journey. It will also aid in deciding which fields are most suitable for you, and what kinds of goals you should pursue.

For example, do you value work-life balance or the ability to quickly advance in your field? Do you want to be the kind of leader that influences others? These are just a few examples of the questions you should consider when defining your career goals. Once you have your list of career priorities, it is time to start identifying ways to achieve those goals.

Some career goals are short-term and focused on self-improvement, while others are long-term and focus on the success of your professional life. For example, if your goal is to learn a new programming language, you will have to decide if you want to seek certification or just take an auto-didactic approach to the task. You will also need to determine if this goal is something that you will be able to implement into your existing job, or if it will allow you to change jobs more easily in the future.

The Utah Opportunity Scholarship is a merit-based award for students who have excelled academically in high school. It is available to both incoming freshman and transfer students. It is important to remember that the University of Utah is committed to a racially and ethnically diverse student body.

Having the right college education can be a game changer for your professional and personal life. If you are interested in applying for scholarships, contact the Office of Nationally Competitive Scholarships (ONCS) at UT. ONCS has helped countless students secure once-in-a-lifetime opportunities, such as the Rhodes or Fulbright Scholarship.

3. Think About Your Passions

Many people have hobbies and interests that they enjoy in their free time. These can include things like reading, exercising, playing a sport, or even watching television. Some people may even turn their passions into careers. For example, if someone is interested in cooking, they may choose to pursue it as a career by becoming a chef.

Other people may take their passions a step further and become teachers or coaches. These individuals have a lot of knowledge about the subjects they teach or coach, so they can help their students or players learn more about those topics.

When answering the question about your passions in your Utah Opportunity Scholarship Application, you should share something that is genuine. It is important to avoid sharing something that you think the interviewer wants to hear, as this will come across as fake. Instead, try to find a way that you can connect your passions to the job for which you are applying.

For example, if you are applying for a position in fundraising, you could mention that you are passionate about raising money for charity by participating in a marathon or other event. This will show that you are dedicated and motivated, which are both qualities that employers look for in employees.

Other passions that may be related to the job include organizing, health and fitness, or finance and investing. These can be used in jobs such as a project manager or an accountant, where organization and planning are critical. Similarly, a passion for fitness and health can be used in professions such as personal trainer or nutritionist. Lastly, a passion for finance and investment can be used in roles such as a financial planner or analyst. By using your passions to help guide your career choices, you can ensure that your professional life will be satisfying and successful. You will be able to balance work and life, which is important for everyone. You will also be able to continue to explore and nurture your passions in the free time that you have outside of work.

4. Think About Your Future

Ultimately, you must ask yourself what your educational goals are and how they relate to the future you want to see for yourself. Considering your educational goals, career goals, and passions will help you decide which scholarships are the best fit for you. Whether you are looking to get into the medical field or earn a degree in public service, your goals should be tied to what will make you happy and successful.

Merit scholarships are reviewed based on a student’s cumulative unweighted high school grade point average (GPA) and course schedule when compared to the rigorous courses offered at each university. In addition to your GPA, the strength of your academic record and your involvement in community activities can play a role in merit scholarship review. In order to be considered for merit scholarships, you will need to complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) and a FAFSA Scholarship Profile.

New legislation passed during the 2021 session created a simplified, statewide achievement-based scholarship called the Opportunity Scholarship. The scholarship is available to students attending Utah’s public technical colleges and universities as well as Idaho’s public community and technical colleges. Here at UT, we call it the Trailblazer Promise Scholarship. The scholarship covers up to full-time base undergraduate tuition and fees each year.

If you are interested in applying for the Trailblazer Promise, please remember that you will need to submit a General Application along with any required conditional applications. You should submit the General Application first each year to ensure that your scholarship is matched with any other funding you may receive.

This scholarship recognizes graduating seniors from a qualifying region in Arizona, Arkansas, Colorado, Connecticut, Delaware, Maine, Massachusetts, Maryland, Montana, Nebraska, Nevada, New Jersey, Ohio, Oregon, Rhode Island, Utah, and Virginia. In addition to the required FAFSA application, a personal statement is required that demonstrates how familial, cultural, and ethnic/racial strengths have prepared you for college and how you plan to harness those strengths to become a success at the University of Utah. Employees of the Esler Companies and their dependents are not eligible for this scholarship.
