International Opportunities with Broad Horizons is a scholarship for high school juniors (class of 2025) who are proactive about broadening their horizons. This means taking risks and stepping outside their comfort zone to learn new things.

Students in Loyola’s Earth Rights Research and Action Clinic have a rare opportunity to conduct field work abroad. Professor of Clinical Law Cesar Rodriguez-Garavito says this experience is transformational.

Studying Abroad

The journey of studying abroad has long been a desirable adventure for brave undergraduate students. Whether it’s for a quarter, summer or full year, the experience is transformative, influencing students’ academic and professional lives for years to come. It’s a chance to step out of their comfort zone, immerse themselves in another culture, learn a new language and gain a global perspective.

The experience cultivates a variety of valuable life skills, including adaptability and resilience. The ability to navigate unfamiliar territories, manage their own affairs and embrace a wide range of experiences is highly valued by employers in today’s increasingly interconnected world. Students will also develop a greater sense of empathy and open-mindedness by connecting with people from different cultures and backgrounds.

Beyond the classroom, international opportunities also provide students with a wealth of hands-on learning opportunities. From learning to cook in Italy to exploring the natural wonders of Chile, students can immerse themselves in the local culture and create unforgettable memories through these unique international opportunities.

Seaver College offers a wide variety of study abroad programs that vary in duration and country, allowing students to tailor their experience to their interests. These include a variety of academic and cultural programs, internships, volunteering and language immersion. Whether it’s through an immersive cultural exchange or taking a business class taught by top faculty at a world-class university, these international experiences provide students with the opportunity to expand their global perspective and take their career aspirations to the next level.

In addition to semester and year-long programs, students have the opportunity to explore various countries through educational field trips (EFTs). These short-term excursions allow students to expand their international knowledge in a way that isn’t possible in a classroom. Students travel with Pepperdine professors, staff and faculty-in-residence to visit historic sites, engage in service, meet with local leaders and attend lectures.

These invaluable experiences will help prepare students to live and work in a global society, which is why we are proud to support students who are proactive about broadening their horizons by applying for scholarships like the Broad Horizons Scholarship. This scholarship is awarded to high school juniors who are actively engaged in preparing for an exciting future and want to be part of the solution by embracing change.

International Careers

For students pursuing careers in the fields of science, technology, engineering, arts and mathematics (STEAM), working abroad may be part of their future plans. International field studies provide an opportunity to explore the nuances of a new culture, while building a network and experience that can be beneficial in a global career.

Students interested in a career in global health, public policy or international development should consider pursuing a graduate degree in these areas. These degrees offer an opportunity to learn more about different cultures and gain valuable skills in international business, management and communication that will be applicable throughout a career.

Edoardo Medico, an MBA student at Loyola University Maryland, has always had a passion for foreign languages and cultures. After participating in an international field study program with a Loyola class, he decided to pursue his MBA at a school that offers a concentration in international management. He was thrilled to have the opportunity to build a strong network in his area of interest, while learning more about international business and management practices.

The ICC, in partnership with the JHU Science Diplomacy Hub and EURAXESS North America, hosted a Global Careers in STEAM forum on October 14. Attendees enjoyed a panel discussion that discussed the importance of international work for career success in science diplomacy. The event also featured roundtable networking sessions with embassy staff to foster conversation and help students explore global opportunities.

Many attendees were enthusiastic about the impact of the forum, with a few even bringing colleagues to share the experience. Several Career Services professionals expressed interest in hosting further events to support student internationalization and research collaboration. They particularly valued the panelists’ perspectives on regional employment trends and the cultural nuances that young scholars must be aware of in order to craft global career strategies.

Whether you are looking to become a policy maker, work in education or focus on international business, the key to a successful career abroad is having the right mindset and flexibility. Working abroad is challenging but rewarding, and it can be a great way to test your limits and grow in confidence and independence.

International Investments

Embracing international investing can be an excellent way to boost your returns and diversify your portfolio. However, it’s important to consider the complexities involved. There are a number of factors to take into account, such as currency risk, political instability, legal uncertainties, and more. With thoughtful research, prudent planning, and a long-term perspective, you can make the most of this dynamic arena.

Emerging markets have high growth potential due to factors such as urbanization, technological advancements, and favorable demographics. In addition, many countries experience a different economic cycle than the United States, allowing investors to benefit from opportunities in both good and bad times. Investing internationally can also provide access to specialized investments, as well as geographic diversification.

Diversification: As a general rule, it is important to diversify your investments across different countries and regions to reduce the risk associated with a single market or economy. This is especially true during a downturn, when your international investments may act as a buffer against losses in your domestic portfolio.

Specialized Investments: Certain international markets have thriving industries that are not yet fully represented in the broader market. For example, technology in developing countries has experienced unprecedented growth, thanks to companies like Alibaba and Tencent. Healthcare in countries like Brazil and India is advancing rapidly, creating new opportunities for pharmaceutical and medical device companies. By exploring international investments, you can capitalize on these unique market trends and boost your return potential.

Cultural Factors: Each country has its own unique cultural environment, which can impact your investments. For example, some cultures may be more receptive to foreign investment than others. Moreover, the legal and regulatory environment varies from country to country. Therefore, it is important to conduct extensive research and seek expert advice when investing abroad.

Tax Implications: There are a variety of tax considerations to keep in mind when investing internationally. For example, the tax laws and treaties of both your home country and the country in which you are investing can significantly impact your financial outcomes. It’s critical to plan carefully, seek expert advice, and take advantage of tax-efficient investment structures to minimize your tax burden.

Global Perspective

Students who have broad perspectives are proactive about gaining new experiences and knowledge, taking risks and putting themselves out there. These are the kinds of students who are well-positioned for success in today’s global economy and for a future of continuous growth, collaboration and prosperity.

When Daniel Medico, MBA ’20, studied abroad as an undergraduate and taught English in Thailand, he knew he wanted to build upon his international experience and gain business leadership skills while growing his worldwide network. He found exactly that with Loyola’s field studies, where part-time MBA students participate in global business trips paired with visits to local companies and conversations with company representatives. It was a transformative experience and one that will help him lead in a truly global world.
